Madekwe was born South London, England into a family of mixed blood. She has a father who is Nigerian and Swiss as well as her mother is English. Her family was raised on an estate in south London council estate and when she was 14, attended The Brit School. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art was where she received the BA in acting. Ashley Leggat, an actress who was twice nominated for a Gemini Award, hails from an extensive Hamilton family. Four of her older brothers were also in the family: twins Todd and Bram, Brett & Rob. Ashley lived in stadiums or baseball fields because the four brothers who were athletic played baseball, hockey, as well as both during summer and winter.
