
Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970 in Newark. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political activism and acting abilities, as well as her knack for rhyme. At 8 years old, her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which translates to "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and had her first public performance in which she sang a version of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst and she kept in touch with the students and the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey was invited by Latifah to sing during the dance. Mark the 45 King, was asked to sing at a school dance.
